Rent Strike

By on November 22, 2018

A rent strike refers to a tenants who group together and refuse to pay rental until their demands and requests are attended to by the landlord.

The demands are usually things to do with repairs and maintenance works which have been neglected for an extended period of time.

Especially those that present a safety risk to residents.

To ensure that a landlord does act on the requirements in order to collect rental due, the rental money is often collated into an escrow account which will only be disbursed when the requirements are met.

In the case of a lawsuit against the landlord, the funds would be handled by a court’s clerk.

The rising demands and expectations on a landlord has meant that rental strikes are occurring more often these days with multi-family properties.

It serves as a reminder for landlords to keep their eyes on the ball when managing rental property or face the wrath of tenants who are not as helpless as one might think.
