Treble damages refer to damages awarded by a court that is three times the amount of the actual damages.

This means should case concern $100,000 in damages, the court can treble damages by awarding $300,000 to the victim.

Such court orders are usually aimed as punishment for actions that a person or entity has done wrong.

For example, when a landlord illegally evicts a tenant out of the house. Or retains security deposit in a manner that is against their agreement.

It must be noted that the authority to award treble damages does not apply to each and every case. And that only cases of dispute that falls under certain categories would it come into play.

It is best to speak to a real estate attorney when one is fighting for one or defending against one.
