By on July 2, 2018

If you are going to buy an ice maker for personal use at home, there is very little reason why you shouldn’t be getting one that is very portable as well.

Because if you are getting one of these kitchen appliances, the odds are that you are someone who loves your drinks chilled. So why would you not want to bring it along for outdoors events or on your trips?

Imagine going on a camping trip bring along an insulated ice box filled up with ice. It might last you a day or two if you are careful with it. That is without mentioning the money you have to spend at the supermarket for ice and getting wet transporting it.

A portable ice maker will solve all these problems.

All you need to do is bring it along, plug it into the power outlet in the RV, boat, or any other power source, then start enjoying refreshingly fresh ice in a matter of minutes.

If that sounds right to you, here are some of the best portable ice makers for your consideration.

Ice cubes come in 3 sizes. While all 3 sizes can be used for drink, don’t forget that the bigger ones can be used for other stuff like champagne cooler buckets or even the evaporative air cooler should you bring that along too.

2) Della Portable Ice Maker

With a killer price range and 5 colors to select from, the Della Portable Ice Maker is an easy option if the household budget is a key decision criteria.

But a lower price does not mean that you have to compromise on quality.

This quiet portable machine can easily churn out up to 26 pounds of ice in a single day, which is on par with Igloo ICE103 but with smaller size and lighter weight.

  • Dimensions – 14.5 x 9.8 x 12.8 inches
  • Weight – 21 pounds

But it marginally lost out on top spot due to a smaller ice bin and material in a combination of plastic and steel.

It’s ice cubes are also limited to 2 sizes.

  • One of the lowest in price of the models we reviewed
  • Can be connected to water supply line
  • Best budget model

If you simply want a portable ice maker that you can easily bring around and don’t really care about other features as long as it serves it’s main purpose, then this item is a nice entry level appliance to buy.

3) Avalon Bay AB-ICE26S

A very popular choice, Avalon Bay AB-ICE26S is a portable ice maker machine with a powerful compressor that generates up to 26 pounds of ice in a day at maximum setting.

  • Dimensions – 11 x 14.8 x 14.7 inches
  • Weight – 19.3 pounds

At a manageable size and weight, it would be the easiest to transport among all models we’ve looked at.

But with a similar production capacity as Della, it is much more pricier.

If you look at the picture alone without knowing it’s size, you might think that you are looking at a washing machine.

It also comes in 3 colors of red, black and silver. 2 less than Della.

Ice cubes come in 2 sizes that is produces in 9-cube batches every 6 minutes.

Edgestar IP210TI is definitely one of the titans when it comes to the best portable ice makers.

It’s operating capacity is 28 pounds of ice a day with an ice bucket holding up to 2.5 pounds of bullet-shaped ice cubes.

That is a better performance level than Igloo ICE103 on both fronts.

On top of that, it is only slightly heavier than the Igloo and comparable in size.

  • Dimensions – 14.5 x 11.8 x 14.5 inches
  • Weight – 31 pounds

But largely because of it being considerably more expensive than Igloo, it is ranked lower.

Available in 3 color including the sexy Titanium and churning out ice cubes in 3 sizes, it will serve you very well both as a countertop or portable ice maker.

Pros

  • Large 2.5 lbs ice bucket

  • Dimensions – 11.7 x 14.2 x 13.3 inches
  • Weight – 23.2 pounds

It has a 2.2 pound capacity ice box which is similar to Igloo ICE103 and slightly lower than Edgestar IP210TI.

Amusingly, it’s size and weight is right smack in between the models that are high and low. Making you wonder if it’s just a coincidence.

And with it’s LCD display that resembles the remote control of an air-conditioner, you can expect easy setting of features and alerts.

Pros

  • Amazing good looks
  • 2.2 lbs ice bucket
  • LCD display and control panel

Cons

  • Only 1 color (white)

7) NewAir AI-100R

From the hours we have spent delving into the world of top ice makers, we’ve come across NewAir AI-100R.

The appearance is strikingly similar to Edgestar IP210TI with some very similar specifications.

  • Dimensions – 14.5 x 11.8 x 14.5 inches
  • Weight – 24.3 pounds

This made us think that maybe they belong to the same company. Or that this ice maker model, or at least the housing, is available as a white label product.

Nevertheless, because it is a great product, NewAir AI-100R belongs in this list.

This model can produce as much as 28 pounds of ice in 24 hours and has a side mounted drainage.

Ice cube are available in 3 sizes and batches of ice is produced as fast as 6 minutes.

Pros

  • Elegant design, especially the one in red
  • Available in 5 colors
  • 28 lbs of ice a day

Cons

  • Not as portable as other models

We cannot deny that NewAir AI-100R is a good looking ice maker with the capabilities to back it up. But there are other model on this list that offer better value.

Nevertheless, this model still deserve to be ranked among the best.

Which ice maker to buy?

As you can observe from this list, we consider Igloo ICE103 as the overall best after hours of reviewing work. It has a pretty fair price point, a workhorse of an ice maker, and a huge ice storage box to boast about.

However, if the buying decision is made purely on portability, then there’s no doubt Avalon Bay AB-ICE26S and hOmeLabs HME010019N takes the checkered flag.

Edgestar IP210TI and NewAir AI-100R has the highest ice making capacity, while we cannot ignore Della Portable Ice Maker as one of the best budget models that packs a real punch.

Whichever ice maker you choose, just remember that while these ice makers are meant to be portable, they can still be fragile. So take extra care when transporting them or you might find that portability means little when they are damaged during transport.
