Granny Flat

A granny flat is a slang used to describe a self-contained accommodation area located in a house, or built as an extension to a house, where an elderly person resides.

Sometimes also called a maid’s quarters, it has it’s own bathroom, laundry area, kitchen, bedroom, and sometimes even a kitchen, etc.

The name arose because the idea was conceived to house aging parents and there are simply not enough rooms in the main house.

Sometimes also called as a secondary dwelling, maid’s quarter, or mother-in-law apartment, building one can be deemed as illegal depending on the zoning regulations.

While these small living areas are commonly attached to a house, they homeowners are also known to build them detached from the main house as a standalone tiny house.
